About

Victor Brauner was a Romanian painter and sculptor renowned for his contributions to Surrealism, exploring themes of spiritualism, myth, the unconscious, and the mysterious through dreamlike universes filled with symbols, metamorphoses, and hybrid forms. Born into a Jewish family in Piatra Neamț, Romania, his childhood was influenced by mysticism and his father's occult Hasidic interests. He began painting in 1917 at the Evangelical School in Brăila, studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest where he was expelled for controversial work, then joined the Free Academy, painting Cézanne-inspired landscapes. Experimenting with Dada, Expressionism, Cubism, and Constructivism, he became a key figure in the Romanian avant-garde, contributing to journals disseminating Dada and Surrealism.
