Toyin Ojih Odutola
About
Toyin Ojih Odutola is a Nigerian-American contemporary visual artist born in 1985 in Ilé-Ife, Nigeria. She moved to the United States at age five, first settling in the Bay Area of California before relocating to Alabama at age nine. Her migrant experience—marked by a sense of displacement and precariousness—has profoundly shaped her artistic practice and thematic concerns. Ojih Odutola studied at California College of Arts in San Francisco and now lives and works in New York City. Known for her distinctive layered multimedia drawings using basic materials such as ballpoint pens, pencils, pastels, and charcoal, Ojih Odutola has become one of the most technically accomplished contemporary artists of her generation. Her work explores the topography of skin, the malleability of identity, and visual storytelling, often challenging conventional representations of Blackness by depicting emotions beyond trauma—including joy, happiness, and nonchalance. Her practice frequently engages with themes of colonialism, migration, dislocation, wealth, and inequality, reimagining the traditions of portraiture as a method for narrative exploration. Ojih Odutola's work is held in major international collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery (London), the National Museum of African Art, and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, among others.
