Tim Biskup
About
Tim Biskup is an American visual artist and designer born on September 21, 1967, in Santa Monica, California. He is considered one of the leading exponents of the Lowbrow art movement, known for his playful and vibrant psychedelic imagery that blends pop-design aesthetics with mid-century modern influences and punk rock energy. After visiting the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1984, where he was exposed to works by Roberto Matta, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Jean Tinguely, Biskup enrolled at Otis College of Art and Design in 1986 but left in 1988, frustrated with the emphasis on conceptualization over practical art-making skills. Biskup's artistic practice spans multiple media including painting, illustration, sculpture, silkscreening, textile production, and product design. He developed his skills through studio animation and technical painting before transitioning to fine art. His work is characterized by dense, character-driven compositions featuring complex color theories, whimsical shapes, and a distinctly populist aesthetic. Beyond traditional fine art, he has produced limited edition prints, clothing, toys, books, vinyl figures, and posters for rock concerts. In 2017, he opened Face Guts, a gallery and project space in Glassell Park, Los Angeles, and published a 240-page retrospective monograph titled 'Tree of Life' in 2019.
