About

Stephen Gibb is a contemporary Canadian artist born in 1962 in Windsor, Ontario, who began exploring art at age seven.[3] He discovered the work of Hieronymus Bosch at age eleven, a pivotal moment that solidified his commitment to becoming an artist and continues to influence his style.[3] Gibb earned a B.F.A. in visual arts from the University of Windsor and now lives and works in Amherstburg, Ontario, with a second studio in Windsor.[2][3] Gibb's artistic practice is characterized by surreal, darkly humorous paintings that blend existential themes with pop culture commentary. His work features anthropomorphic foods, inanimate objects, and animals in impossible situations, often employing visual puns and symbolic language.[2][4] Rather than identifying strictly as a pop surrealist, Gibb describes his work as "existential editorial cartoon realism" or "cautionary fairy tales for adults."[5][6] His paintings are executed in oil on wood panels using traditional techniques including glazing and chiaroscuro, creating luminous, richly layered compositions.[1] Gibb's career has gained significant international recognition, with his work collected globally and exhibited in major cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and Hollywood.[2][3] A major career milestone came in 2018 when he was commissioned to create album artwork for rapper Trippie Redd's "Life's a Trip," which substantially increased his profile.[1][2][3] He is currently represented by the St. Germain Gallery in Toronto.[1][2]
