About

Serge Brignoni was a Swiss avant-garde painter and sculptor born in Chiasso, Ticino, Switzerland. He moved to Bern with his family in 1907 and studied art initially with Victor Surbek before attending the Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he encountered German Expressionism and Russian Constructivism. In 1923, he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, meeting artists like Alberto Giacometti and Picasso, and becoming exposed to African art, which influenced his shift towards Surrealism and Primitivism after encounters with André Breton and Tristan Tzara.[1][2][3]

Surrealism with Primitivist influences, characterized by dreamlike anthropomorphic compositions, vivid colors, metamorphosis themes, and synthesis of simple volumes.
