Šarūnas Sauka
About
Šarūnas Sauka, born in 1958 in Vilnius, Lithuania, emerged on the art scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s during a period of limited artistic freedom under Soviet censorship. He studied at the Lithuanian State Art Institute (now Vilnius Academy of Arts) from 1978 to 1985, graduating and quickly establishing himself as a rebellious figure challenging societal norms through his provocative works. In 1989, at age 31, he received the Lithuanian National Art and Culture Prize, the country's most prestigious art award, and joined the artist group Group 24, known for its utopian-elitist principles opposing commercialism.
Postmodernist with surreal, apocalyptic visions akin to Hieronymus Bosch, featuring hyper-detailed, lifelike elements in multilayered narratives blending mythology, literature, and Christian iconography with grotesque satire.
