About

Sam Yong is a self-taught painter and illustrator from Melbourne, Australia, born in 1986 in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo. He immigrated to New Zealand with his family at age two and later moved to Melbourne to pursue his art career. Yong is known for his hyperrealistic portraits of animals and nature-oriented subjects with darker thematic elements, ranging from minimalistic detail to full-scale murals. His work explores the connection between human narratives and the natural world, reflecting his love of solitude and adventure. After years of developing his technical skills through portraiture and drawing, Yong transitioned to painting, drawing inspiration from classical baroque and romantic traditions while incorporating modern subject matter and approaches.
