About

Ryota Matsumoto is a Japanese artist, architect, designer, writer, and educator renowned as a theorist and progenitor of the postdigital movement and hybrid art. His work transcends traditional boundaries, integrating digital technologies, analog media, and interdisciplinary design to explore themes of trans-humanism, synthetic biotechnology, and the Anthropocene epoch. He blends 3D modeling with traditional media like acrylic, ink, graphite, and photo collages, creating dynamic hybrid collages that juxtapose biomorphic technological artifacts with obsolete infrastructures. Matsumoto founded Ryota Matsumoto Studio and has collaborated with figures such as Kisho Kurokawa, Peter Christopherson of Coil, Arata Isozaki, Cesar Pelli, and MIT Media Lab. As an educator, he serves as adjunct professor at Transart Institute for Creative Research (University of Plymouth), research associate at New Centre for Research and Practice, fellow of British Art Network, and affiliate with City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture. His professional design work includes high-profile projects like Kyushu University Ito Campus masterplan, Shinjuku redevelopment, and others for Nihon Sekkei Inc.
