About

Williams popularized the term 'lowbrow' with his 1979 book The Lowbrow Art of Robt. Williams, which challenged high art norms and aggregated elements of West Coast outlaw culture, punk, and pop surrealism. He founded Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine, exhibited at galleries like La Luz de Jesus, and published works including Zombie Mystery Paintings (1990), Visual Addiction (1989), and others. His art features chaotic visual energy, subversive humor, complex symbolism, vibrant ultra-violent imagery, and high technical standards drawn from comics and narrative painting. A Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in 2010, he continues as a respected painter with global influence.
