About

Ray Caesar (born October 26, 1958) is an English digital surreal artist celebrated as the grandfather of digital art.[1][2] Born in London, England, he moved to Canada at an early age and currently resides in Toronto.[1] Caesar spent 17 years working in the Art & Photography Department of the Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto, where he documented cases of child abuse, surgical reconstruction, and medical research—experiences that profoundly shaped his artistic vision.[1][3] Caesar's work is characterized by digitally created surreal imagery using 3D modeling software called Maya, which he mastered while working as a senior animator in the digital animation industry from 1998 to 2001.[1][4] His artistic practice merges elements of childlike innocence with grotesque physical deformities, blending decorative styles from various historical periods including Art Deco and Victorian aesthetics.[1] Inspired by surrealists such as Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dalí, Caesar creates complex inner worlds populated by enigmatic figures in uncanny environments that evoke both clinical technology and romantic nostalgia.[2] Caesar's work is collected by prominent figures including the Hearst Family, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, and Madonna, and has been selected by the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim in New York.[2] He received a Primetime Emmy Nomination in 1999 for Outstanding Special Effects and has exhibited internationally at major art fairs and institutions.[3][4]

Digital surrealism blending childlike innocence with grotesque imagery, merging historical decorative styles (Art Deco, Victorian) with contemporary digital techniques. Work characterized by uncanny environments, cryptic figures, and an undercurrent of Dickensian macabre juxtaposed with clinical technology and romantic nostalgia.
