About

Nikolina Petolas is a Croatian contemporary surrealist artist based in Zagreb, known for creating allegorical narratives that blend classical traditions with surrealism. Her work explores themes of nature, human identity, society, isolation, and an uncertain future through fantastical realms featuring animals, hybrid creatures, and human figures in historical interiors and overgrown gardens. Initially working as a commercial photographer, graphic designer, and illustrator, she transitioned to personal artistic expression, driven by childhood imaginings of hidden worlds and a war-torn upbringing that delayed her full pursuit of art. She employs both traditional oil painting and digital techniques, including photo collages from her own photography combined with illustration, to craft photorealistic yet altered surreal landscapes reflecting psychological and social aspects of human behavior.
