About

Mikuláš Medek was a prominent Czech painter born into a notable artistic and military family as the son of General Rudolf Medek and grandson of impressionist painter Antonín Slavíček. He began painting at a young age, studying at the State School of Graphics in Prague (1942–1944), followed by brief attendance at the Academy of Fine Arts (1945–1946) and the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design (1946–1949), from which he was expelled after the communist coup due to his father's background. Despite political persecution, including bans on exhibitions and blacklisting, Medek continued creating, working briefly as a laborer while producing influential works blending surrealism, existentialism, and later abstraction and informel techniques using layered enamels and oils.
