About

Michael Joy is a contemporary surrealist artist based in Chicago who works primarily in sculpture, digital collage, and photo manipulation.[1][2] Born in the late 1960s in the Southwest United States, Joy developed his artistic practice through formal training at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he interned at Photographic Conservation Associates, Ltd. under mentor Murray Mattenson.[3] His artistic philosophy is deeply influenced by surrealism, particularly the work of René Magritte, combined with his interests in metaphysics and spiritual exploration, which he began studying at age 16 through Creative Guidelines in Phoenix, Arizona.[1][3] Joy's creative process is characterized by intuitive, meditative approaches to both traditional and digital media. In sculpture, he works with molding and casting to create three-dimensional pieces that juxtapose contradictory and complementary objects.[1] His digital collage work, developed in collaboration with fellow artist Bailin Pagadala, involves harvesting vintage photographs from the public domain and combining them through photo manipulation to create surreal narratives.[2] His work is noted for its quirky sense of humor, wordplay, and ability to produce thought-provoking observations that challenge conventional perspectives.[4] Beyond visual art, Joy has been involved in various creative endeavors including technical writing, photography, and speaking engagements on creativity and artistic process. He co-founded Pastry Live and has shared his insights on how dreams, memory, and intuition fuel creative practice.[6] Joy continues to be active in the contemporary art scene, maintaining an online presence and making his work available through prints and exhibitions.
