About

Luchita Hurtado was a Venezuelan-American painter born in Maiquetía, Venezuela, in 1920. She immigrated to the United States at age eight, settling in New York City where she studied at the Art Students League and Washington Irving High School. Hurtado married Chilean journalist Daniel del Solar in 1937, entering New York's art scene and connecting with figures like Roberto Matta and Frida Kahlo. After divorcing in 1944, she worked as a fashion illustrator for Condé Nast and muralist for Lord & Taylor. She later married Austrian artist Wolfgang Paalen in the late 1940s, living in Mexico City, and then wed American artist Lee Mullican in 1957, settling in Santa Monica, California, with frequent visits to Taos, New Mexico.[1][2][3][4][5]
