Contemporary Surrealism Oil painting

About

Lix North is a New Zealand-born, Australia-based contemporary artist specializing in surreal, hyperrealist conceptual portrait paintings, particularly self-portraits that reflect her internal landscape with conceptual depth, subtle satire, and meticulous detail. Growing up in isolated rural hill country in New Zealand, her childhood surrounded by nature fostered an early, innate drive to create, shaping her imagination and artistic identity. She graduated from NMIT’s School of Visual Arts, studying painting and photography, and caught early attention with a solo show at Oedipus Rex gallery arranged by Jennifer Buckley, becoming the youngest artist featured in E.M. Caughey’s ‘Art New Zealand Today’. Settling in Brisbane, Australia in 2007, she established Lix Creative studio and shifted her practice in 2016 with the pivotal self-portrait ‘Insurgent’, embracing authentic personal expression that boosted her career.
