About

Melbourne-born artist Kim Evans is a contemporary surrealist painter and illustrator who has been working professionally for over 30 years.[1] Her detailed, otherworldly imagery draws from and explores the unconscious, dreams, and symbols, with recurring themes including the feminine psyche, transformation, and human-animal nature.[1] Evans began her artistic practice seriously at age 12-13, receiving her first professional commission in 1989 to paint an oversized fiberglass Eastern Rosella with sculptor Louise Skacej.[1] Beyond visual art, she is also a writer with published musings, interviews, and short stories, and has been working on a novel-length manuscript.[1] Evans worked as a freelance illustrator and editorial illustrator for major Australian publications including AFR's Boss Magazine, The Age, and Motor Magazine from the 1990s to 2010.[2] She taught art and illustration at NMIT (now Melbourne Polytechnic) from 1999 to 2012.[1] Her exhibiting career flourished in the early 2000s with participation in major group shows including 'Brave Destiny' in Brooklyn, New York (2003) and the 'Fantastic & Visionary Art' touring exhibition throughout Australian regional galleries (2003-2004).[1] She was one of the original artists in the Beinart Collective and has continued exhibiting at Beinart Gallery since its opening in 2016.[1] Currently based in Healesville in the Yarra Valley, Evans draws inspiration from Australian wildlife and her vivid dreams.
