John Rego
About
John Rego is a contemporary painter, illustrator, and educator based in Boston, Massachusetts. He specializes in surrealist and pop-surrealist narratives, drawing inspiration from the absurdities of the human and natural world, scientific illustration, northern Renaissance painting, New England folk art, and artists such as Mark Ryden, Salvador DalĂ, and Todd Schorr. His work explores themes of absurdism, humanity's relationship with nature, daily observations, romanticism, psychedelia, and elements of nature like birds and specific New England locations including Mount Auburn Cemetery and the Arnold Arboretum. Rego primarily works in acrylics, oils, and digital media, employing painterly, stylized, and whimsical techniques across subjects like animals, nature, fantasy, and still life.
