Jason Mowry
About
Jason Mowry is a contemporary artist and illustrator based in Columbus, Ohio, where he maintains a studio and teaches at Columbus College of Art and Design.[1] Raised between art museums and comic book shops, Mowry developed a distinctive artistic voice that blends formal training with the visual language of sequential art. His work synthesizes myth, personal narrative, and symbolic imagery to create pieces that speak to larger collective narratives, drawing inspiration from the stories he reads and the people and times surrounding him.[1][3] Mowry's artistic practice is characterized by a tension between classical formality and surreal, expressive forms. His paintings have exhibited nationally and internationally, appearing in prestigious publications including Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, Graphite Magazine, Spectrum, and The Society of Illustrators illustration annuals.[2] His work has been featured in group exhibitions at major galleries including Haven Gallery in New York and Corey Helford Gallery, and he was a finalist in the 14th International ARC Salon Competition.[2][7] His artistic vision draws from the Golden Age of fairy tale illustration, particularly the work of artists like Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, combined with the dark beauty and primal truths found in Grimms' Fairy Tales.[5] Mowry's pieces create a captivating interplay between violence and stillness, simplicity and opulence, the familiar and the fantastical, with each work functioning as a glimpse into a larger narrative.
