James McCarthy is a contemporary surrealist landscape painter based in Brandon, Florida, known for his psychedelic and cosmic mindscapes that explore themes of space-time, the afterlife, seasons, weather, and mortality. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, he graduated from Tampa Catholic High School in 1974 and studied as a painting major at the University of South Florida from 1977 to 1981. After working at his father's commercial art studio, Design/Art, until 2001, he began seriously pursuing fine art painting in 1999, exhibiting in Tampa Bay area galleries and selling work online.[2][4][6][7]
