Takahiro Hirabayashi
About
Takahiro Hirabayashi is a contemporary Japanese artist born in Nagano in 1984. He graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2011 and has been active in international art fairs since 2015. Trained in traditional Japanese painting techniques, Hirabayashi creates mixed-media works that blend age-old artistic methods with contemporary portraiture. His practice is deeply rooted in Buddhist philosophy and the cultural heritage of his hometown, which features numerous Jizo statues—protectors of the vulnerable in Japanese belief systems. Hirabayashi's work explores universal themes of boundaries, transitions, and spiritual protection that resonate across cultures, moving beyond purely Japanese contexts to create emotionally resonant imagery accessible to global audiences.
Contemporary surrealism infused with Buddhist mythology and traditional Japanese painting techniques. His dreamy portraits examine boundaries between sky and land, nature and humanity, childhood and adulthood, using young girls as spiritual guides navigating liminal spaces.
