About

Haralampi G. Oroschakoff is an Austrian painter, writer, and publisher born in Sofia, Bulgaria on May 23, 1955, and raised in Vienna, Austria. He is a descendant of an exiled Russian aristocratic family whose ancestors served as heads of state and diplomats in Tsarist Russia, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Oroschakoff discovered enthusiasm for art and Orthodox spirituality at age five and has become recognized as a pioneer of East-West dialogue in art and a reviver of Eastern iconography in Western painting. Since joining the international art scene in 1981, Oroschakoff has developed a multifaceted career spanning painting, drawing, installation, video performance, and literary work. His artistic practice is characterized by symbolic depth and complex iconography that combines elements from Orthodox tradition, the Russian avant-garde, and Western modernism. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked a pivotal shift in his perspective, leading him to travel and exhibit throughout the former Soviet bloc and develop deep friendships with representatives of the Eastern European avant-garde. Beyond visual art, Oroschakoff is an accomplished writer and essayist who explores cultural identity, exile, and the role of art in society. He has participated in significant political and cultural forums including the German-Russian Forum (2001), St. Petersburg Dialogue (2002), and German-Russian cultural debates (2003-2006). He is described by writer Martin Mosebach as an "orthodox painter and heterodox historian" whose work stimulates profound intellectual discourse on European cultural history and intercultural understanding.
