Gilberto Hernández Ortega (1924-1978) was a prominent Dominican painter recognized as a leading artist of his generation, primarily associated with Surrealism while also experimenting with Expressionism and Abstraction. Born in Baní, the capital of Peravia Province in the Dominican Republic, he was raised in Santo Domingo and studied at the National School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1945 after training under instructors such as Celeste Woss y Gil and Josep Gausachs. He began his teaching career at the same institution in 1946, becoming vice director in 1954, and later opened a private art school in Santo Domingo in 1966, mentoring multiple generations of Dominican artists.
