About
Fred Berger was a Chicago-based artist born in 1923 and active primarily in the mid-20th century. He emerged as a central figure in the Monster Roster group during the 1950s, known for rough, expressionistic paintings and sculptures featuring heads and putty-like figures. Berger rejected conforming to art movements for recognition, stating he gave up 'the nonsensical notion of painting like other people in order to belong to some art movement.'[2]
Expressionist with old master drawing quality; later Chicago Imagist influences
