About

Esteban Francés was a Spanish surrealist painter born in Portbou, Girona, Spain, on July 30, 1913. He spent his early childhood in Figueras before moving to Barcelona in 1925 with his family. There, he initially studied law but abandoned it to enroll at the Escola de la Llotja to pursue art. Fleeing the Spanish Civil War, he traveled to Paris, where he became a key member of the surrealist circle around André Breton, associating with artists such as Yves Tanguy, Óscar Domínguez, Victor Brauner, Roberto Matta, and Gordon Onslow Ford. In the 1930s, he had a romantic relationship with Remedios Varo. He was involved in surrealist movements in Paris, Mexico, and New York, and later moved to Argentina during World War II, becoming one of the first Surrealists in South America.
