Pierre Schmidt
About
Pierre Schmidt is a German digital collage artist and illustrator based in Berlin, known professionally as Dromsjel. He creates mind-bending surreal imagery by combining vintage 20th-century photography with hand-drawn illustrations and digital manipulation techniques. Schmidt's work explores the depths of the psyche and the relationship between conscious, unconscious, and dream worlds, inviting viewers to question reality and rediscover hidden details within his compositions. Schmidt began his career as an illustrator creating album covers for music bands, interpreting the mood of their music through his art. His creative process is intuitive and non-linear—he starts without a formed idea, allowing unexpected associations to emerge as the work develops. He has built a significant following on Instagram (@drømsjel) and has exhibited his work in galleries worldwide, designed album artwork, and created promotional art for major projects including Netflix's 'Gaga: Five Foot Two'. His artistic practice draws heavily from classical and death metal music, film aesthetics (particularly David Lynch's enigmatic style), and 19th-century German philosophy, especially Friedrich Nietzsche's theories on individuality and existence. By blending these diverse influences, Schmidt has developed a unique visual language that challenges conventional perceptions of reality through surreal fantasy and psychedelic imagery.
