About

Dan Seagrave is a seminal figure in heavy metal and contemporary surrealist art, born in Worksop, UK in 1970 and raised in Ravenshead near Nottingham.[3] A self-taught painter, he gained early recognition at age 17 when he created an album cover for local thrash metal band Lawnmower Deth, which led to commissions from independent record labels.[3] His breakthrough came in the early 1990s during the death metal explosion, when his intricate and imaginative work attracted major labels like Roadrunner Records in New York, establishing him as a defining visual voice of the genre.[1][3] Seagrave's highly detailed paintings employ curved perspective, freeform distortions, atmospheric perspective, and refined texture to create what he describes as "controlled chaos."[2] Beyond album covers for iconic bands like Morbid Angel, Entombed, and Suffocation, his work has expanded into large-scale murals, personal artistic projects (including his Temple series exploring themes of greed and isolation), prints, and visual effects.[2][3][4] Since receiving Canadian resident status in 2003, he has maintained a transatlantic career, balancing commercial commissions with personal projects that can take over a year to complete.[3]
