Chet Zar
About
Chet Zar is an American artist born November 12, 1967, in San Pedro, California, known for his dark visual art, makeup effects, and digital animation. He began his artistic career in high school, working as a special effects makeup artist in the film industry for approximately 32 years, contributing to major productions including The Ring, Hellboy I & II, Planet of the Apes, and critically acclaimed music videos for the band Tool. In 2000, at the suggestion of horror author Clive Barker, Zar transitioned from commercial film work to fine art, focusing on oil painting and sculpture to escape the creative constraints and politics of the film industry. As a fine artist for over two decades, Zar has established himself as a master of contemporary dark art, creating darkly surreal and often darkly humorous paintings featuring grotesque creatures and macabre imagery inspired by horror films, EC horror comics, graveyards, and industrial decay. His work reflects lifelong themes of fear, anxiety, and isolation. Largely self-taught, Zar has become a prominent figure in the dark art movement, curating exhibitions and founding the Dark Art Society, a community dedicated to elevating awareness of dark art through Patreon membership and an official podcast.
