About

Calvin Ma is a contemporary ceramic sculptor born and raised in San Francisco, California, known for transforming action figures into vehicles for storytelling and emotional expression. He studied industrial arts at San Francisco State University, initially pursuing toy design before transitioning to ceramics and earning his Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the Academy of Art University. Ma's artistic practice explores personal struggles with social anxiety through intricately handcrafted ceramic sculptures that blend childhood nostalgia with adult introspection, creating works that investigate themes of belonging, protection, and resilience.

Contemporary surrealism blending childhood toy aesthetics with conceptual exploration of social anxiety; characterized by handbuilt, intricately detailed anthropomorphic figures with marionette-like joints, monochromatic palettes with selective color accents, and symbolic domestic or natural environments
