Contemporary Surrealism Oil painting

About

Brian Mashburn is an American artist based in Asheville, North Carolina, known for his hyper-realistic oil paintings that blend urban and industrial landscapes with natural environments, often evoking surreal and post-apocalyptic themes. He graduated with a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002. His work draws from everyday observations, history, natural science, philosophy, and personal experiences including travel to Asia and recent events like the birth of his son and Hurricane Helene. Mashburn has worked as a picture framer, illustrator, and graphic designer alongside his painting career, and he incorporates influences from 19th-century Romantic painters like Caspar David Friedrich as well as his Asian-American heritage.
