About

Alex Grey is one of the most popular American painters alive, best known for his visionary art that depicts the human body as a multi-dimensional "x-ray" interweaving anatomical, psychic, and spiritual forces. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1953, Grey grew up in a Methodist household until age nine, when his parents became disenchanted with organized religion due to its apparent hypocrisy and racism during the Civil Rights Movement. At age 21, a transformative LSD experience at a party where he met his future wife Allyson fundamentally shifted his worldview from agnostic existentialism to radical transcendentalism, curing him of longstanding depression and setting him on his artistic path. Grey's artistic practice, which he calls "visionary art," involves entering altered states through meditation, chanting, dancing, or psychedelics to access transcendent visions that he then captures in paint. His most celebrated work, the Sacred Mirrors series—a collection of 21 life-size paintings created over a 10-year period—emerged from a shared psychedelic vision with Allyson in 1976, where both experienced identical scenes that they each painted in their distinctive styles. This experience confirmed Grey's belief in a universal shared consciousness and became the foundation for his career exploring the interconnectedness of all beings. In 2004, Grey and Allyson founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM) in New York, a cultural center celebrating the alliance between divinity and creativity. His work has achieved global recognition, appearing as album art for major musicians including TOOL, the Beastie Boys, and Nirvana, and has been exhibited worldwide. Grey has become a prominent voice in psychedelic culture and spirituality, delivering keynote addresses at major conferences and advocating for the integration of psychedelic science, art, and spirituality.
